With the official release of ‘Netflix and chill’ in people’s lives, it seems that the culture of cinema-going has disappeared in the mist. Every person can platform nowadays from the comfort of their homes. Movies reflect comfort, however with the phenomenon of the ‘Barbenheimer’ mania has rejuvenated the classic passion of cinema. The director of the legendary Godfather father trilogy and many esteemed mid nineties classics, Francis Ford Coppola had commented positively on the trending moviegoing fad. Coppola on his instagram stories commented,
“I have yet to see [Barbie and Oppenheimer], but the fact that people are filling big theaters to see them and that they are neither sequels nor prequels, no number attached to them, meaning they are true one-offs, is a victory for cinema.”
The classic culture of watching movies in the theater is making its way into the mechanisms of Gen Z. Coppola is hopeful of the future of moviegoing. He stated in another post, “My hunch is that we’re on the verge of a golden age. Wonderful and illuminating cinema seen in large theaters.” According to Coppola he sees value in movies which have a cathartic impression on viewers. He openly criticizes the marvel movies by stating that, “we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration” which Marvel movies doesn’t possess. As a matter of fact, the ‘golden age’ can’t be far behind because the blockbusters, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenehiemer’ has earned ﹩1.2 billion worldwide.
